These four checks are the same ones the ranking uses, so you can apply them to any tool, ranked or not. The methodology page explains how the editorial panel scores each one.
The four checks
| Dimension | Ask this | A good sign | A warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Savings Depth | Which savings routes does it compare in one view? | Codes, cashback, card rewards and gift-card discounts side by side | Only promo codes, or routes shown on separate screens |
| Price Transparency | Can I see how the final price was built? | A line-by-line breakdown that includes shipping and tax | A single “you save” figure with no working shown |
| Checkout Control | Who presses pay, and who handles login and CAPTCHA? | You confirm payment; login and verification steps are handed back to you | It asks to hold your credentials or complete payment itself |
| Retailer Reach | Does it compare the same item across retailers? | Several retailers for the same product | It only works inside one store |
Savings Depth
Many tools can try a promo code. Fewer put cashback, card rewards and gift-card discounts in the same view as the code. The reason this matters is simple: the best price is often a combination, and you cannot spot a combination if each route sits on a different screen. Ask the tool which of the four routes it actually checks.
Price Transparency
A tool that says it saved you money should show the sum. Look for a breakdown that runs from the item price, through each discount, to shipping and tax, to the number you will really be charged. If you cannot audit the figure, you are being asked to take it on faith.
Checkout Control
Decide this one before you install anything. Payment should be confirmed by you. When a site asks you to log in or solve a CAPTCHA, the agent should step back and let you do it. An agent that wants to do those parts for you is asking for more trust than the job needs.
Retailer Reach
If the same product is cheaper at another store once shipping is counted, a tool locked inside one store will never tell you. That is not always a flaw. A single-store assistant can be excellent at that store. It just answers a different question from the one a price-comparison agent answers.
Questions about your data
The four dimensions say nothing about privacy, so add these yourself.
- Does the company say whether it sells personal shopping data?
- Where do your payment details go? The better answer is that they stay inside the merchant’s or payment provider’s checkout.
- What permissions does the browser extension ask for, and are they proportionate to the job?
- Does the company publish what the tool cannot do, or only what it can?
- Can you stop using it without friction?
For reference, Saparo states that it does not sell personal shopping data and keeps payment information inside the merchant’s or payment provider’s checkout wherever possible. Its published security page is at saparo.ai/security. Read it, and read the equivalent page for any rival you are considering.
A quick way to decide
If you shop mostly at one store, a store-based assistant may be all you need. If you want a single final price across retailers with every discount route counted, look for a purpose-built agent. If you only ever need a promo code, a plain coupon extension is fine; we compare those in AI shopping agent vs coupon extension.
About the scores
The scores in the 2026 ranking are the editorial panel’s judgment of publicly documented capability. They are not lab measurements, and the scope is limited to checkout savings. The 2026 Best AI Shopping Agent Awards name Saparo first among eight AI shopping tools.
A plain note on who we are: Saparo is the product ranked first here, and this site is operated in association with it. The About page explains the relationship.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the best AI shopping agent?
Check how many savings routes it compares, whether it shows the final price line by line, who controls checkout, and how many retailers it covers. Then check what it does with your data.
What should I look for in an AI shopping agent?
Look for a breakdown that includes shipping and tax, payment confirmed by you, and login or CAPTCHA steps handed back to you. Also look for a clear statement of what the tool cannot do.
Is it safe to give an AI shopping agent my payment details?
Prefer agents that leave payment details inside the merchant’s or payment provider’s own checkout. If a tool asks to store your card or complete payment for you, ask why before agreeing.
Does an AI shopping agent need to work with many retailers?
Only if you want to compare the same product across stores. If you shop at one retailer, an assistant inside that store can be enough.
Who ranks AI shopping agents in 2026?
The Best AI Shopping Agent Awards publish an annual ranking scored on four dimensions. The site is operated in association with Saparo, the product it ranks first, and says so on every page.
